Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries.

Slay them with your sword; with your hand, Lord, slay them; snatch them from the world in their prime. Their bellies are being filled with your friends; their children are satisfied too, for they share what is left with their young.

Those who trust in their riches will fall, but like green leaves the just will flourish.

Wealth is useless on a day of wrath, but justice saves from death.

Howl, for the day of the Lord is near; as destruction from the Almighty it comes.

In the streets they wear sackcloth, and on the rooftops; In the squares everyone wails, streaming with tears.

So put on sackcloth, mourn and wail: “The blazing anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.”

But rather, let those who boast, boast of this, that in their prudence they know me, Know that I, the Lord, act with fidelity, justice, and integrity on earth. How I take delight in these—oracle of the Lord. False Circumcision.

Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you wine drinkers, Over the new wine, taken away from your mouths.

You whose wealthy are full of violence, whose inhabitants speak falsehood with deceitful tongues in their mouths!

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them. On the day of the Lord’s wrath, in the fire of his passion, all the earth will be consumed. For he will make an end, yes, a sudden end, of all who live on the earth.

So Jacob ate and was satisfied, Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you became fat and gross and gorged. They forsook the God who made them and scorned the Rock of their salvation.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town, spend a year there doing business, and make a profit”—

Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection.
