The king took counsel, made two calves of gold, and said to the people: “You have been going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.”

This is the account of the sin of the house of Jeroboam for which it was to be cut off and destroyed from the face of the earth.

It was not enough for him to follow the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nebat. He even married Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal, and worship him.

Can human beings make for themselves gods? But these are not gods at all!

Cast away from you all the crimes you have committed, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, house of Israel?

Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where [you] are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!’

I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me,

but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?
