“I am Joseph,” he said to his brothers. “Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could give him no answer, so dumbfounded were they at him.

The second time, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh.

He said, “Who are you, sir?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of mercy and supplication, so that when they look on him whom they have thrust through, they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and they will grieve for him as one grieves over a firstborn. Behold, he is coming amid the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. All the peoples of the earth will lament him. Yes. Amen.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!”

Therefore I am terrified before him; when I take thought, I dread him.

But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches you, you are dismayed.

Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the cisterns here; we could say that a wild beast devoured him. We will see then what comes of his dreams.”

To one another, however, they said: “Truly we are being punished because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen. That is why this anguish has now come upon us.”

Then Reuben responded, “Did I not tell you, ‘Do no wrong to the boy’? But you would not listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood.”

After inquiring how they were, he asked them, “And how is your aged father, of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”
