Genesis 17:19

New American Bible - revised edition

God replied: Even so, your wife Sarah is to bear you a son, and you shall call him Isaac. It is with him that I will maintain my covenant as an everlasting covenant and with his descendants after him.

Then the Lord’s angel said to her: “You are now pregnant and shall bear a son; you shall name him Ishmael, For the Lord has heeded your affliction.

I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. Her also will I bless; she will give rise to nations, and rulers of peoples will issue from her.

So Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael could live in your favor!”

But my covenant I will maintain with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you by this time next year.

I will maintain my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

Sarah then said, “God has given me cause to laugh, and all who hear of it will laugh with me.

The Lord appeared to him and said: Do not go down to Egypt, but camp in this land wherever I tell you.

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I will give all these lands, in fulfillment of the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.

When the bow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature—every mortal being that is on earth.

according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age—and Sarah herself was sterile—for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy.
