Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that no one will understand the speech of another.

Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth.

These are the descendants of Ham, according to their clans, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations.

These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their origins and by their nations. From these the nations of the earth branched out after the flood.

From these branched out the maritime nations. These are the descendants of Japheth by their lands, each with its own language, according to their clans, by their nations.

The Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built.

Then the Lord God said: See! The man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil! Now, what if he also reaches out his hand to take fruit from the tree of life, and eats of it and lives forever?

They did not know, of course, that Joseph understood what they said, since he spoke with them through an interpreter.

He silences the trusted adviser, takes discretion from the elders.

The one enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord derides them,

The Lord foils the plan of nations, frustrates the designs of peoples.

“I would soon find a shelter from the raging wind and storm.”

The Lord said to him: Who gives one person speech? Who makes another mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?

You shall no longer see a defiant people, a people of speech too obscure to comprehend, stammering in a tongue not understood.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am,” I said; “send me!”

Beware! I will bring against you a nation from far away, O House of Israel—oracle of the Lord; A long-lived nation, an ancient nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you cannot understand.

So if the whole church meets in one place and everyone speaks in tongues, and then uninstructed people or unbelievers should come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?

The Lord will raise up against you a nation from afar, from the end of the earth, that swoops down like an eagle, a nation whose language you do not understand,
