Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle while Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill.

Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they took a rock and put it under him and he sat on it. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady until sunset.

Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said,

It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.

Joshua kept the javelin in his hand stretched out until he had carried out the ban on all the inhabitants of Ai.
