For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,

But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.

Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.

“Do not fear, beloved. Peace! Take courage and be strong.” When he spoke to me, I grew strong and said, “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”

It was good for me to be afflicted, in order to learn your statutes.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I hold to your promise.

Of laughter I said: “Mad!” and of mirth: “What good does this do?”

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of merriment.
