So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was dense darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days.

People could not see one another, nor could they get up from where they were, for three days. But all the Israelites had light where they lived.

But Moses replied, “It is not right to do so, for what we sacrifice to the Lord, our God, is abhorrent to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is abhorrent to the Egyptians before their very eyes, will they not stone us?

Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites were, was there no hail.

But the Lord will distinguish between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt, so that nothing belonging to the Israelites will die.

Yes, I will make it a ruin: it shall not be pruned or hoed, but will be overgrown with thorns and briers; I will command the clouds not to rain upon it.

Among the idols of the nations are there any that give rain? Or can the mere heavens send showers? Is it not you, Lord, our God, to whom we look? You alone do all these things.

Should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to bow down to the King, the Lord of hosts, then there will be no rain for them.

Do you not say, ‘In four months the harvest will be here’? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.

Who confers distinction upon you? What do you possess that you have not received? But if you have received it, why are you boasting as if you did not receive it?

For then the anger of the Lord will flare up against you and he will close up the heavens, so that no rain will fall, and the soil will not yield its crops, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you. Need for Fidelity.

Elijah was a human being like us; yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land.

They have the power to close up the sky so that no rain can fall during the time of their prophesying. They also have power to turn water into blood and to afflict the earth with any plague as often as they wish.
