Even the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well.

When day came the council of elders of the people met, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their Sanhedrin.

When they heard this, they went to the temple early in the morning and taught. When the high priest and his companions arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin, the full senate of the Israelites, and sent to the jail to have them brought in.

Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands of the presbyterate.

They answered him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, nor has any of the brothers arrived with a damaging report or rumor about you.

“On one such occasion I was traveling to Damascus with the authorization and commission of the chief priests.

and I did so in Jerusalem. I imprisoned many of the holy ones with the authorization I received from the chief priests, and when they were to be put to death I cast my vote against them.

“My brothers and fathers, listen to what I am about to say to you in my defense.”

“My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent.

And here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison all who call upon your name.”

On the next day, their leaders, elders, and scribes were assembled in Jerusalem,

During those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (there was a group of about one hundred and twenty persons in the one place). He said,

My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to this day.

Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did;

Paul looked intently at the Sanhedrin and said, “My brothers, I have conducted myself with a perfectly clear conscience before God to this day.”

Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; [I] am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead.”

Many times, in synagogue after synagogue, I punished them in an attempt to force them to blaspheme; I was so enraged against them that I pursued them even to foreign cities.

Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, “My brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem.

For you heard of my former way of life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it,

in zeal I persecuted the church, in righteousness based on the law I was blameless. Righteousness from God.
