These are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse; the oracle of the man God raised up, Anointed of the God of Jacob, favorite of the Mighty One of Israel.

Jacob called his sons and said: “Gather around, that I may tell you what is to happen to you in days to come.

David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse from Bethlehem in Judah who had eight sons. In the days of Saul Jesse was old and well on in years.

The women played and sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, David his tens of thousands.”
