Then Samuel addressed all the people, “Do you see the man whom the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people!” Then all the people shouted out, “Long live the king!”

When the messengers arrived at Gibeah of Saul and reported the news in the people’s hearing, they all wept aloud.

Saul also went home to Gibeah, accompanied by warriors whose hearts the Lord had touched.

Then they asked for a king. God gave them Saul, son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

Flinging the money into the temple, he departed and went off and hanged himself.

I also issue this decree: if any man alters this edict, a beam is to be taken from his house, and he is to be lifted up and impaled on it; and his house is to be reduced to rubble for this offense.

Someone saw this and reported to Joab, “I saw Absalom hanging from an oak tree.”
