The three sons of Zeruiah were there—Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel, who was as fleet of foot as a gazelle in the open field,

Abner turned around and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” He replied, “Yes.”

Abner said to him, “Turn right or left; seize one of the young men and take what you can strip from him.” But Asahel would not stop pursuing him.

When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside within the city gate to speak with him privately. There he stabbed him in the abdomen, and he died for the blood of Asahel, Joab’s brother.

Joab and Abishai his brother had been lying in wait for Abner because he killed Asahel their brother in battle at Gibeon. David Mourns Abner.

He did what was right in the Lord’s sight, walking in the way of David his father, not turning right or left. The Book of the Law.

Turn neither to right nor to left, keep your foot far from evil.

Only be strong and steadfast, being careful to observe the entire law which Moses my servant enjoined on you. Do not swerve from it either to the right or to the left, that you may succeed wherever you go.

Therefore be strong and be careful to observe all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, never turning from it right or left,
