Also say to Amasa: ‘Are you not my bone and flesh? May God do thus to me, and more, if you do not become commander of my army permanently in place of Joab.’”

Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in Joab’s place. Amasa was the son of an Ishmaelite named Ithra, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Joab’s mother Zeruiah.

Then the king said to Amasa: “Summon the Judahites for me within three days. Then present yourself here.”

You rescued me from the strife of my people; you made me head over nations. A people I had not known became my slaves;

May God do thus to Abner, and more, if I do not carry out for David what the Lord swore to him—

All the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron, and they said: “Look! We are your bone and your flesh.

The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.

So all the Israelites came out as one, from Dan to Beer-sheba including the land of Gilead, and the assembly gathered to the Lord at Mizpah.
