His mother, however, replied: “Let any curse against you, my son, fall on me! Just obey me. Go and get me the young goats.”

I myself will serve as a guarantee for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him back and set him before you, I will bear the blame before you forever.

Then the king said, “If anyone says a word to you, have him brought to me, and he shall not touch you again.”

The king then said to the woman: “Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf.”

You will not pollute the land where you live. For bloodshed pollutes the land, and the land can have no expiation for the blood shed on it except through the blood of the one who shed it.

And the whole people said in reply, “His blood be upon us and upon our children.”

As she fell at his feet she said: “My lord, let the blame be mine. Please let your maidservant speak to you; listen to the words of your maidservant.
