Nevertheless, as late as the twenty-third year of the reign of King Joash, the priests had not made needed repairs on the temple.

In the seventh year, Jehoiada took courage and brought into covenant with himself the captains: Azariah, son of Jehoram; Ishmael, son of Jehohanan; Azariah, son of Obed; Maaseiah, son of Adaiah; and Elishaphat, son of Zichri.

But Joab replied: “May the Lord increase his people a hundredfold! My lord king, are not all of them my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord seek to do this thing? Why should he bring guilt upon Israel?”

In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah, from Beer-sheba.

But in the seventh year, Jehoiada summoned the captains of the Carians and of the guards. He had them come to him in the house of the Lord, made a covenant with them, exacted an oath from them in the house of the Lord, and then showed them the king’s son.

the priests may take for themselves, each from his own vendor. However, they must make whatever repairs on the temple may prove necessary.”

Accordingly, King Joash summoned the priest Jehoiada and the other priests. He asked, “Why do you not repair the temple? You must no longer take funds from your vendors, but you shall turn them over for the repairs.”

Thus says the Lord of hosts: This people has said: “Now is not the time to rebuild the house of the Lord.”
