The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice resound.

He it is who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever.

Now then, speak thus to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to become ruler over my people Israel.

Have you an arm like that of God, or can you thunder with a voice like his?

There I will make a horn sprout for David; I will set a lamp for my anointed.

He has lifted high the horn of his people; to the praise of all his faithful, the Israelites, the people near to him. Hallelujah!

Kings on earth rise up and princes plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one:

“I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”

With an iron rod you will shepherd them, like a potter’s vessel you will shatter them.”

May we shout for joy at your victory, raise the banners in the name of our God. The Lord grant your every petition!

Now I know the Lord gives victory to his anointed. He will answer him from the holy heavens with a strong arm that brings victory.

Lord, you are a strength for your people, the saving refuge of your anointed.

Your throne, O God, stands forever; your royal scepter is a scepter for justice.

In your name they sing joyfully all the day; they rejoice in your righteousness.

I will crush his foes before him, strike down those who hate him.

My faithfulness and mercy will be with him; through my name his horn will be exalted.

Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day. Assistance Promised. Then all the people feared the Lord and Samuel.

Here I stand! Answer me in the presence of the Lord and the Lord’s anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I wronged? From whom have I accepted a bribe and shut my eyes because of it? I will make restitution to you.”

So Samuel said to him: “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.

The Lord said to Samuel: How long will you grieve for Saul, whom I have rejected as king of Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for from among his sons I have decided on a king.

While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near for battle with Israel. That day, however, the Lord thundered loudly against the Philistines, and threw them into such confusion that they were defeated by Israel.
