Then an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with spear in hand while David was playing the harp nearby.

He answered, ‘I will go forth and become a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ The Lord replied: You shall succeed in deceiving him. Go forth and do this.

The spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and he was tormented by an evil spirit from the Lord.

So the servants of Saul said to him: “Look! An evil spirit from God is tormenting you.

If your lordship will order it, we, your servants here attending to you, will look for a man skilled in playing the harp. When the evil spirit from God comes upon you, he will play and you will feel better.”

When war broke out again, David went out to fight against the Philistines and inflicted such a great defeat upon them that they fled from him.

Now Saul heard that David and his men had been located. At the time he was sitting in Gibeah under a tamarisk tree on the high place, holding his spear, while all his servants stood by him.
