When he sized David up and saw that he was youthful, ruddy, and handsome in appearance, he began to deride him.

As Saul watched David go out to meet the Philistine, he asked his general Abner, “Abner, whose son is that young man?” Abner replied, “On your life, O king, I have no idea.”

When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord assured him: This is the man I told you about; he shall govern my people.
