When Eli was very old, he kept hearing how his sons were treating all Israel, and that they were behaving promiscuously with the women serving at the entry of the meeting tent.

Why do you stare greedily at my sacrifices and at the offerings that I have prescribed? Why do you honor your sons more than you honor me, fattening yourselves with the choicest part of every offering of my people Israel?

the Lord came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

I announce to him that I am condemning his house once and for all, because of this crime: though he knew his sons were blaspheming God, he did not reprove them.

but Eli called to him, “Samuel, my son!” He replied, “Here I am.”

In his old age Samuel appointed his sons judges over Israel.

We too must be like all the nations, with a king to rule us, lead us in warfare, and fight our battles.”

His sons did not follow his example, but looked to their own gain, accepting bribes and perverting justice.

and said to him, “Now that you are old, and your sons do not follow your example, appoint a king over us, like all the nations, to rule us.”
