Thisis the testimonyof John,whenthe Jewssentto him priestsand Levitesfrom Jerusalemto askhim, "Whoare you?"
The Jewsthengathered aroundHim, and were sayingto Him, "How longwill You keepus in suspense?IfYou are the Christ,tellus plainly."
Paulsaid,"Johnbaptizedwith the baptismof repentance,tellingthe peopleto believein Him who was comingafterhim, that is, in Jesus."
"And whileJohnwas completinghis course,he kept saying,'Whatdo you supposethat I am?I amnot [He]. But behold,one is comingafterme the sandalsof whosefeetI amnot worthyto untie.'
The Jewsthensaidto Him, "Whatsigndo You showus as your authority for doingthese things?"
Sothe Jewswere sayingto the man who was cured,"It is the Sabbath,and it is not permissiblefor you to carryyour pallet."
Thenthe Jews[began] to arguewith one another,saying,"Howcanthis mangiveus [His] fleshto eat?"
Thereforethe Jewswere grumblingaboutHim, becauseHe said,"I amthe breadthat came downout of heaven."
"Be carefulagainst an infectionof leprosy,that you diligentlyobserveand doaccording to allthat the Leviticalprieststeachyou; as I have commandedthem, so you shall be carefulto do.
He cameas a witness,to testifyaboutthe Light,sothat allmight believethroughhim.
The Jewsthensaid,"It took forty-sixyearsto buildthistemple,and will You raiseit up in threedays?"
The manwent away,and toldthe Jewsthat it was Jesuswho had madehim well.
For thisreasonthe Jewswere persecutingJesus,becauseHe was doingthese thingson the Sabbath.
For thisreasonthereforethe Jewswere seekingall the moreto killHim, becauseHe not onlywas breakingthe Sabbath,but alsowas callingGodHis ownFather,makingHimselfequalwith God.
Afterthese thingsJesuswas walkingin Galilee,for He was unwillingto walkin Judeabecausethe Jewswere seekingto killHim.
Sothe Jewswere seekingHim at the feastand were saying,"Whereis He?"
The Jewsthenwere astonished,saying,"Howhas this manbecome learned,having neverbeen educated?"
Sothe Jewswere saying,"SurelyHe will not killHimself,will He, sinceHe says,WhereI am going,you cannotcome'?"
The Jewsansweredand saidto Him, "Do we not sayrightlythat You are a Samaritanand havea demon?"
The Jewssaidto Him, "Nowwe knowthat You havea demon.Abrahamdied,and the prophets[also]; and You say,'IfanyonekeepsMy word,he will nevertasteof death.'
Sothe Jewssaidto Him, "You are not yetfiftyyearsold, and have You seenAbraham?"
The Jewspickedup stonesagainto stoneHim.
and manyof the Jewshad cometo Marthaand Mary,to consolethem concerning[their] brother.
Thisis the messagewe have heardfrom Him and announceto you, that Godis Light,and in Him there is nodarknessat all.
