But whenthey stretchedhim out with thongs,Paulsaidto the centurionwho was standingby, "Is it lawfulfor you to scourgea manwho is a Romanand uncondemned?"
When the centurionheard[this], he wentto the commanderand toldhim, saying,"Whatare you aboutto do?For thismanis a Roman."
The commanderanswered,"I acquiredthiscitizenshipwith a largesum of money."And Paulsaid,"But I was actuallyborn[a citizen]."
