A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Be not like the horse, or like the mule, who have no understanding, whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, so that they do not come near you.

In the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him who is without understanding.

A reproof enters more into a wise man than a thousand stripes into a fool.

Strike a scorner, and the simple will beware; reprove one who has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Though you should pound a fool in a bowl with a bar in the midst of wheat, his foolishness will not depart from him.

What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and the spirit of meekness?

and having readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

I told you before, and I say beforehand, as being present the second time and being absent now. I write to those who sinned before, and to all the rest, that if I come again, I will not spare.
