The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and are silent; they send up dust on their heads; they gird on sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

Why do we sit still? Gather yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there. For Jehovah our God has put us to silence, and has given us poisonous water to drink, because we have sinned against Jehovah.

How alone sits the city that was full of people! She has become like a widow, once great among the nations, a noblewoman among the nations, but now has become a tribute-payer.

The roads of Zion mourn without any going to the appointed feasts. All her gates are deserted; her priests sigh; her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

He sits alone and keeps silence because He laid it on him.

The face of Jehovah has shared them out; He will no longer look on them; they did not respect the persons of the priests; they did not favor the elders.

Those who ate delicacies are desolate in the streets; those reared in scarlet embrace dunghills.

Rulers were hanged by the hand; the faces of elders were not honored.

The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music.

and shall cause their voice to be heard against you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall throw dust on their heads. They shall wallow themselves in the ashes.

And they will be bald for you, and gird with sackcloth. And they shall weep for you with bitterness of soul, a bitter wailing.

They shall also gird on sackcloth, and trembling shall cover them; and shame shall be on all faces, and baldness on all heads.

Weep like a virgin clothed with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

So the understanding ones shall keep silent in that time; for it is an evil time.

In that day the beautiful virgins and the young men shall faint for thirst.

And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, says the Lord Jehovah. The dead bodies shall be many. In every place one shall throw them out, saying, Hush!

For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne. And he laid his robe from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

And Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of Jehovah until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust on their heads.

And they threw dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe! Woe to the great city, by which all who had ships in the sea were rich out of her costliness! For in one hour she was ruined.
