who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not by our works, but by His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, and you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus by the Spirit of our God.

Figuratively this is like baptism, which also saves us now. It is not washing off the dirt from the body, but a response to God from a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and complete will of God.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. But if it is by works, then is it no longer by grace; otherwise work would no longer be work.

Let us then come with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

and have embraced the new nature, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him who created it,

But You, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy and truth.

yet we know that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. Even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, rather than by the works of the law. For by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Therefore by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

In times past, you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. You had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

and be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law.

For before the children had been born, having done neither evil nor good, so that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but through Him who calls,

through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise from on high has visited us;

He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy,

His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.

Who is a God like You, bearing iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of His inheritance? He does not remain angry forever, because He delights in benevolence.

Enter not into judgment with Your servant, for in Your sight no one living is righteous.

O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption.

How then can man be righteous with God? Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?

But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward mankind appeared,

What shall we say then? The Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith,

So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.

But to him who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.

to perform the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant,

I will declare your righteousness, and your works, yet they shall not profit you.

if they fall away, to be renewed once more to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and subject Him to public shame.

For You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in mercy to all who call on You.

Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy. For You render to every man according to his work.

“What is man that he should be pure? And he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

Though I were righteous, my own mouth would condemn me; though I were perfect, it would prove me perverse.

It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you enter to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Then I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean. From all your filthiness and from all your idols, I will cleanse you.

“I indeed baptize you with water to repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

if by any means I may make my kinsmen jealous and might save some of them.

let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse them from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
