Now it was reported to David that Ahithophel was conspiring with Absalom, and David said, “O  Lord, make the advice of Ahithophel folly.”

Then Absalom and all of the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had decided to undermine the prudent advice of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring calamity to Absalom.

When Ahithophel realized that his advice was not followed, he saddled his donkey and returned to his house in his own city. He gave instruction to his household, then he hanged himself and died; he was interred in the tomb of his father.

But while the prophet was speaking, the king said, “Have we made you a counselor to the king? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” The prophet refrained, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and not heeded my advice.”

Then the king said, “Hang him on it!” So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath was pacified.

Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; seek out his wickedness until You find none.

because they rebelled against the words of God, and scorned the counsel of the Most High.

Arise, O  Lord! Confront him, cast him down! Deliver my soul from the wicked by Your sword,

Let the lying lips be put to silence, which speak insolently with pride and contempt against the righteous.

Let those who rejoice at my calamity be ashamed and brought to confusion; let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who exalt themselves against me.
