If it had not been the Lord who was on our side— let Israel now say—

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.

Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus says the Lord: I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals, when you followed Me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

Stand fast now with your enchantments, and with the multitude of your sorceries in which you have labored from your youth. Perhaps you shall be able to profit, perhaps you may cause trembling.

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

When the Lord brought back the captives of Zion, we were like those who dream.

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”

In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and He heard me.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them to bring disaster, as the Lord had said and as He had sworn to them. They were in great distress.

Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, “You must cast every son that is born into the river, and you must preserve every daughter’s life.”

And they committed harlotries in Egypt. They committed harlotries in their youth. There their breasts were pressed, and there their virgin bosom was handled.

Judah has gone into captivity, under affliction and great servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest; all her persecutors overtook her in the midst of distress.

I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, “I will not listen!” This has been your manner from your youth, that you have not obeyed My voice.

Unto You do I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills; from whence comes my help?

Afflicted and close to death since my youth, I suffer Your terrors; I am helpless.

The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia. The Israelites served Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.

From there, I will give her vineyards to her, and the Valley of Achor as a door of hope. She will respond there as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

Now there was no blacksmith found throughout all the land of Israel. For the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make for themselves swords or spears.”

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.

Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their labor. They built for Pharaoh storage cities: Pithom and Rameses.
