He who speaks flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children will fail.

They speak empty words, each with his own neighbor; with flattering lips and a deceitful heart they speak.

For he flatters himself in his own eyes, so that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

For there is no uprightness in their mouth; destruction is in their midst; their throat is an open tomb; they flatter with their tongue.

Surely, in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird;

He who goes about as a slanderer betrays secrets; therefore associate not with the babbler.

For such people do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own appetites, and through smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.

For neither at any time did we come with flattering words, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed. God is our witness.

So the servants of Saul spoke these words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?”
