The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but he who keeps company with prostitutes squanders his wealth.

A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him.

The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

A wise son delights his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

He who begets a fool begets grief, and the father of a fool is bereft of joy.

A foolish son is the ruin of his father, and the quarrels of a wife are a constant dripping.

In addition to being wise, the Teacher still taught the people knowledge, by weighing, studying, and arranging many proverbs.

And who knows if this man will be wise or foolish? Yet he will gain power over all for which I have toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.

These are other proverbs of Solomon which the men of King Hezekiah of Judah copied.

He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs numbered one thousand and five.

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer my accusers.

Correct your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your soul.
