Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this company will lick up all that are around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

They set out from Midian and went to Paran, and they gathered men from Paran and then arrived in Egypt and presented him before Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and provisions and land.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

They killed the kings of Midian, in addition to the rest of those who were killed: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.

Now are you really better than Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab? Did he ever contend with Israel or wage war with them?

The Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord gave them into the hands of Midian for seven years.
