These sought for their fathers’ registration in the genealogical registry, but it was not found. Therefore, they were considered as unclean and removed from the priesthood.
Some of the chiefs of the fathers’ households gave to the work. The magistrate gave to the treasury one thousand drachmas of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.
Then Nehemiah the magistrate, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were teaching the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Stop mourning and weeping.” (This was because all the people wept when they heard the words of the Law.)
You shall put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate of judgment, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he goes in before the Lord. And Aaron shall bear the judgment of the Israelites over his heart before the Lord continually.
And the remainder of the grain offering shall belong to Aaron and to his sons, which is a most holy part of the food offerings to the Lord made by fire.
It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it to them for their portion of My food offerings made by fire. It is most holy, as is the sin offering and as is the guilt offering.
He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him about the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word will they go out, and at his word they will come in, both he and all the Israelites with him, even all the assembly.”
Of Levi he said: Let Your Thummim and Your Urim be with Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah, and with whom You contended at the waters of Meribah,
