But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite subordinate, and Geshem the Arabian heard it, they laughed at us in mockery, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”

Also, one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me.

When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite subordinate heard this, it deeply grieved them that there was a man coming to seek the welfare of the Israelites.

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly irritated, and he mocked the Jews.

In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Geshem confirms it, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel; consequently you are rebuilding the wall. According to these words, you are their king.

Because they all wanted to frighten us, they thought, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, and it will not be done.” So now, O God, strengthen my hands.

“But now those who are younger than I mock me, whose fathers I disdained to put with the dogs of my flock.

Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorn of those who are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those who are around us.

You have made us a source of contention to our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves.

Restore us, O God of Hosts, and cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.

I say, Your counsel and strength for war are only empty words. Now on whom do you rely that you rebel against me?

For each time I speak, I cry out; I cry out, “Violence and devastation,” because to me the word of the Lord has resulted in reproach and derision daily.

Then Ishmael carried away captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

He said to them, “Depart. The girl is not dead, but is sleeping.” And they laughed Him to scorn.

They laughed at Him in ridicule. But when He had put them all out, He took the father and the mother of the girl and those who were with Him and entered where the girl was lying.

And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this Man perverting our nation, and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ a King.”

From then on, Pilate tried to release Him. But the Jews cried out, “If you release this Man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!”

“We have found this man a troublemaker, instigating riots among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

Still others had trials of mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment.
