Nehemiah 1:3

They said to me, “The remnant that returned from captivity is there in the province enduring great affliction and reproach. Also, the wall of Jerusalem remains broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”

then I will cut Israel out of the land which I have given them, and I will cast this house, which I have consecrated for My name, out of My sight, and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people.

All the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard tore down the walls of Jerusalem all around.

So they burned down the house of God, tore down the wall of Jerusalem, burned down all the palaces with fire, and destroyed all the precious items.

Now these are the people of the province who went up from the captivity of the exiles, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon, and came again to Jerusalem and Judah. Each returned to his own city.

“May it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the temple of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goes diligently, and prospers in their hands.

Now these are the leaders of the provinces who lived in Jerusalem (though in the cities of Judah everyone lived on his own property within their cities): Israel, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon’s servants.

So I went out by night by the Valley Gate toward the Dragon’s Well and then to the Refuse Gate, because I was inspecting the broken-down walls of Jerusalem and its burned gates.

Finally, I said to them, “You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem is devastated and its gates are burned with fire. Come, and let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so that we will no more be a reproach.”

and said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should not my face be troubled when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”

These are the people of the province who returned from the captivity of the exiles whom King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had carried away, but came back to Jerusalem and to Judah, everyone to his city.

Now in the days of Ahasuerus, who reigned from India to Cush, over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces,

We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those who are around us.

He who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls.

Therefore, I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.

So now I will tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be consumed; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trodden down.

And I will make them a horror and an evil to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a reproach and a byword, a taunt and a curse, in all places wherever I shall drive them.

I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence; and will make them a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse and an astonishment, a hissing and a reproach among all the nations where I have driven them,

The Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the houses of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: As My anger and My fury have been poured out upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so will My fury be poured out upon you when you go to Egypt. And you will be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach. And you shall see this place no more.

Go up upon her walls and destroy, but make not a full end. Take away her battlements. For they are not the Lord’s.

And all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down all the walls of Jerusalem all around.

In the days of her affliction and misery Jerusalem remembers all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the enemy, there was no one to help her. The adversaries saw her and mocked at her desolation.

Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her princes are among the nations; the Law is no more, and her prophets find no vision from the Lord.

You have heard their reproach, O  Lord, all their schemes against me,

Remember, O  Lord, what has come upon us; look, and see our reproach!

I will make your cities a waste and bring your sanctuaries to desolation, and I will not smell the aroma of your fragrant offerings.

I will scatter you among the nations and I will draw out a sword after you. And your land shall be desolate and your cities a waste.
