For the Lord, the God of Israel, says that He hates divorce; for it covers one’s garment with violence, says the Lord of Hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.

Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying?”

The Pharisees and Sadducees came and, testing Him, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.

The Pharisees also came to Him, tempting Him and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?”

One of them, who was a lawyer, tested Him by asking Him,

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven against men. For you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who are entering to go in.

But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons through the ruler of the demons.”

He arose and went from there to the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan, and the people came to Him again. And again, as was His custom, He taught them.

He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”

The Pharisees came up and began to debate with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven to test Him.

He warned them, “Take heed. Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish. But inside you are full of extortion and wickedness.

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things and derided Him.

But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The scribes and the Pharisees watched Him to see whether He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against Him.

But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, not having been baptized by John.

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled the Sanhedrin and said, “What shall we do? This Man is performing many signs.

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.

The Pharisees heard the people murmuring these things concerning Him. So the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.

Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?

They said this, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear them.

Neither let us test Christ, as some of them also tempted and were destroyed by serpents.
