Modern English Version

Whereas Edom says, “We are impoverished, but we will rebuild the ruins,” thus says the Lord of Hosts: They may build, but I will tear down. They will be called the Wicked Territory, and the people against whom the Lord has indignation forever.

Surely, He tears down, and it cannot be built again; He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

When He gives quietness, who then can make trouble? And when He hides His face, who then can behold Him, whether it is done against a nation or against a man only?

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against Him and prospered?

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

Remember, O  Lord, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem, who said, “Raze it, raze it, to its foundation!”

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the people of no effect.

No wisdom or understanding or counsel can stand against the Lord.

Nothing remains but to bow down among the prisoners, and they shall fall among the slain. For all this His anger is not turned away, and His hand is stretched out still.

But they shall swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines towards the west; they shall plunder the sons of the east together; they shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them.

It shall not be quenched night or day; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; no one shall pass through it forever and ever.

For My sword has drunk its fill in heaven; behold, it shall come down for judgment on Edom, and on the people whom I have devoted to destruction.

There is hope for your future, says the Lord, that your children will come back to their own border.

Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord that He has planned against Edom, and His purposes that He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock will drag them out; surely He will make their habitations desolate because of them.

Concerning Edom. Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Is there no more wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?

Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan. For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I punish him.

They will eat up your harvest and your bread which your sons and your daughters should eat. They will eat up your flocks and your herds; they will eat up your vines and your fig trees; they will impoverish your fenced cities, in which you trusted, with the sword.

Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?

You shall fall by the sword. I will judge you in the border of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

therefore thus says the Lord God: I will also stretch out My hand against Edom and cut off man and beast from it. And I will make it desolate. From Teman even to Dedan they shall fall by the sword.

I will lay My vengeance upon Edom by the hand of My people Israel. And they shall do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury. And they shall know My vengeance, says the Lord God.

I will make you a bare rock. You shall be a place to spread nets upon. You shall be built no more, for I the Lord have spoken, says the Lord God.

I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities shall not be inhabited. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword, and repressed all pity; his anger tore with no ceasing, and his wrath persisted with no end.

I will destroy the winter house as well as the summer house, and the houses of ivory will perish; the great houses will come to an end, says the Lord.

Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take from him a levy of wheat, though you have built houses of hewn stone, you will not dwell in them; though you have planted pleasant vineyards, you will not drink their wine.

But indeed the Lord gives a command, and He will shatter the great house to bits, and the small house to pieces.

Cross over to Kalneh and see, and go from there to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines— are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory?

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom (We have heard a report from the Lord and a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying: “Rise up! Let us rise up against it for battle!”):

For the slaughter and the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.

but Esau I have hated, and I have made his mountains a desolation and left his inheritance for the jackals of the desert.

“He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
