But he answered his father, ‘Look! These many years have I served you. Nor have I ever transgressed your commands, yet never have you given me a goat, so that I might be merry with my friends.

For you say, ‘I am rich, and have stored up goods, and have need of nothing,’ yet do not realize that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.

saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’

You said, “It is vain to serve God. What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, and that we have walked as mourners before the Lord of Hosts?

saying to the priests and prophets of the house of the Lord of Hosts, “Should I weep and dedicate myself during the fifth month as I have done in these many years?”

who say, “Stand by yourself; do not come near to me, for I am holier than you!” These are smoke in My nose, a fire that burns all day.

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.

Therefore by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

“He was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and entreated him.

But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed the fattened calf for him.’
