Thus says the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in Me, that they have gone far from Me, and have walked after vanity and have become vain?

He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but he who keeps company with prostitutes squanders his wealth.

The lover of pleasure will be a man of poverty; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.

He who keeps the law is a wise son, but he who is a companion of gluttons shames his father.

“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

He told His disciples: “There was a rich man who had a steward who was accused to the man of wasting his resources.

But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed the fattened calf for him.’

“My people, what have I done to you, and how have I wearied you? Answer Me!

O generation, consider the word of the Lord: Have I been a wilderness to Israel? A land of darkness? Why do My people say, “We are free to roam. We will come no more to You”?

For My people have committed two evils. They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

“Come,” they say, “let us get wine, and let us fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as today, only more so.”

Get out of the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.”

Behold, there is joy and gladness, slaying of oxen and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”

Alas, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel to anger, they are estranged and backward.

Like a bird that strays from her nest, so is a man who strays from his home.

Precious treasure and oil are in the house of the wise, but a foolish man squanders it.

He who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.

for the price of a prostitute leaves a man with a loaf of bread, and an adulteress preys upon his precious life.

For behold, those who are far from You shall perish; You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You.

They shall receive the wages of unrighteousness. They count it a pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes who revel in their own deception while they carouse together with you.

And He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

But now in Christ Jesus you who were formerly far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.’ So he divided his estate between them.

When he had spent everything, there came a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in want.
