But Solomon did not make any Israelites into slaves, but instead used them as men of war, as his servants, his leaders, his captains, rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.

Now one of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord, but a creditor has come to take my two sons as slaves.”

And now you are planning to subdue for yourselves the people of Judah and Jerusalem as male and female slaves. Do you all not surely have among you guilt before the Lord your God?

Now our flesh is the same as the flesh of our countrymen. Our children are like their children, but we are subjugating our sons and our daughters as servants. Behold, some of our daughters are in bondage already, and we are powerless to do anything because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

and they made their lives bitter with hard service—in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. In all their service they made them serve with rigor.

If you buy a Hebrew servant, he will serve for six years, but in the seventh he shall go out free without paying anything.

If the sun has risen on him, then there is blood guilt for him. He must make full restitution. If he has nothing, then he will be sold for his theft.

For many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even themselves. And I will recompense them according to their deeds and according to the works of their hands.

All nations shall serve him and his son and his son’s son until the time of his own land comes; and then many nations and great kings will make him their servant.

For it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord of Hosts, that I shall break his yoke from off their neck and tear away their bonds, and strangers shall no longer make them their slaves.

“At the end of seven years, each of you shall set free his Hebrew brother who has been sold to you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you.” But your fathers did not obey Me or incline their ear.

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them:

that every man should let his male slave and every man his female slave, being a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free so that no one should keep them, a Jew his brother, in bondage.

You may take them as an inheritance for your children after you, for their possession. They shall be your slaves forever. But over your brothers, the Israelites, you shall not rule over one another with rigor.

But since he was not able to pay, his master ordered that he be sold with his wife, their children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
