Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to your father’s prophets, or to your mother’s prophets.” Then the king of Israel said to him, “No. The Lord has called these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”

Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger, but before the messenger came to him, Elisha said to the elders, “Are you aware that this son of a murderer has sent a man to take off my head? When the messenger enters, shut the door and hold it against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”

And while he was speaking with them, the messenger came down to him, and then the king said, “This calamity is of the Lord! Why should I hope in the Lord any longer?”

“After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great guilt, seeing that You our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve and have given us such deliverance as this,

and that He would show you the secrets of wisdom! For they would double your prudence. And know that God overlooks some of your iniquity.

that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?

Fools, because of their transgressions, and because of their iniquities, were afflicted.

The folly of man subverts his way, and his heart rages against the Lord.

Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of all the streets as an antelope in a net; they are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of your God.

Woe is me because of my brokenness! My wound is grievous. But I said, “Truly this is an illness, and I must bear it.”

Why do you cry because of your affliction? Your sorrow is incurable. Because of the multitude of your iniquities, because your sins are numerous, I have done these things to you.

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed; His compassions do not fail.

and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they then accept the punishment of their iniquity,

But the land shall be abandoned by them, and enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They shall make amends for their iniquity, because they despised My judgments and because they abhorred My statutes.

I will endure the rage of the Lord, because I have sinned against Him, until the time when He pleads my case and executes judgment for me. He will bring me out into the light; I will look upon His vindication.

Moses said to the Lord, “Why have You hurt Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your eyes, that You lay the burden of all this people on me?

But the next day all the assembly of the Israelites murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the Lord.”

The Israelites spoke to Moses, saying, “Behold, we perish, we perish, we all perish.

Men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues, and they did not repent and give Him glory.
