And when he was distressed, he entreated the face of the Lord his God, and he greatly humbled himself before the God of his fathers.

“I have sewn sackcloth over my skin and thrust my horn into the dust.

“Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer You? I will lay my hand over my mouth.

There is hope for your future, says the Lord, that your children will come back to their own border.

in order that you may remember, and be humiliated, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I am pacified toward you for all that you have done, says the Lord God.

Who knows? He might turn aside and relent, and He might leave behind a blessing — a grain offering and a food offering for the Lord your God.

Who knows? God may relent and change His mind. He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”

Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who carry out His judgment. Seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden on the day of the Lord’s anger.

“But the tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but struck his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner.’

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and all the world may become accountable to God.
