“The thorn bush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade. If not, let fire come out from the thorn bush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’

Then Jehoash the king of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thorn bush in Lebanon sent to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife.’ But a wild animal passed through in Lebanon and trampled the thorn bush.

The trees of the Lord are full of sap, the cedars of Lebanon which He planted,

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon.

The strong shall be as tinder, and his work like a spark; they will both burn together, and no one will quench them.

and it will be upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

The breath of our life, the anointed king of the Lord, was captured in their traps, of whom we said, “Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.”

Fire has gone out from its branch; it has devoured its shoots and fruit, so that there is no strong rod in it, a scepter to rule. This is a lamentation, and has become a lamentation.

Behold, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches and shade for a forest, and high stature; and its top was among the clouds.

Its leaves were fair, and its fruit much, and in it was food for all. The animals of the field had shadow under it, and the fowl of the heavens lived in its boughs, and all flesh was fed of it.

Those that dwell under his shadow will return, they will flourish like the grain and grow as a vine. Their fragrance will be like the wine of Lebanon.

because a fire went out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it has devoured Ar of Moab and the masters of the high places of Arnon.

This indeed is the least of all seeds, but when it has grown, it is the greatest among herbs and is a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.”

“So the trees said to the thorn bush, ‘You come and rule over us.’

“Now then, did you show good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king? Did you deal well with Jerub-Baal and his family? Did you do to him as his actions deserved,

If not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo, and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and from Beth-millo and consume Abimelech!”

Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the city gate. The two other combat units attacked everyone in the field and struck them down.

So everyone likewise cut off a branch and followed Abimelech. They placed them on the fortification and set the fortification on fire over them. So all the people of the Tower of Shechem died, about a thousand men and women.
