But Zerah the Cushite came out against them with an army of one million men and three hundred chariots. And he came up to Mareshah.

And at that time there was no peace to the one traveling in or out because there was a great panic on all those who dwelt in the land.

Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them to bring disaster, as the Lord had said and as He had sworn to them. They were in great distress.

The hands of Midian dominated Israel, and because of Midian the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

When Israel’s fighting men saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in hollows, among rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.

Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you roused me to bring me up?” And Saul answered, “I am greatly distressed, for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me any longer by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have called you that you might make known to me what I should do.”
