After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the Lord, “Who should go up against the Canaanites first, in order to wage war against them?”

Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please ask for a word from the Lord today.”

Then Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

You shall put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate of judgment, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he goes in before the Lord. And Aaron shall bear the judgment of the Israelites over his heart before the Lord continually.

He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him about the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word will they go out, and at his word they will come in, both he and all the Israelites with him, even all the assembly.”

Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shan, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, or their daughter villages, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.

I will no longer drive out from before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died,

Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

They buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath Heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

The Israelites arose, went up to Bethel, and asked God, “Who should go up first to wage war against the Benjamites?” The Lord said, “Judah first.”

Then the Israelites went up and wept before the Lord until evening. They asked the Lord, “Should we advance and fight our brother-tribesmen the Benjamites again?” The Lord said, “Advance against them.”

The Israelites asked the Lord (because the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it then), “Should we go out again to wage war with our brother-tribesmen the Benjamites, or should we not?” The Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.”

Therefore they inquired again of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” And the Lord answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the equipment.”
