Modern English Version

Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have put Him, and I will take Him away.”

“I will rise now and walk around the city, in the streets and in the plazas; I will seek him whom my soul loves.” I sought him, but did not find him.

Jesus therefore, knowing everything that would happen to Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”

Again Jesus asked them, “Whom do you seek?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put Him.”

Do not consider your handmaid to be a sinful woman, for out of the abundance of my concern and provocation I have spoken until now.”
