“Truly, I know it is so, but how can a man be righteous with God?

“If they sin against You (for there is no man who does not sin), and You get angry with them and hand them over to the enemy so that they are carried away as captives to the land of the enemy, far or near,

O  Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we who escaped exile yet remain to this very day. Behold, we stand before You in our guilt, for we should not stand before You because of this.”

How then can man be righteous with God? Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?

Behold, even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in His sight;

Then the wrath of Elihu the son of Barakel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was aroused; his wrath was aroused against Job because he justified himself rather than God.

‘I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, nor is there iniquity in me.

“For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, but God has taken away my judgment.

‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his maker?

If you, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

Enter not into judgment with Your servant, for in Your sight no one living is righteous.

Therefore by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
