Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord.

I am not worthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant. For with my staff I crossed over this Jordan, and now I have become two encampments.

Now the heart of David struck him after he had counted the people. David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly by what I have done. Now may the Lord take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have behaved very foolishly.”

But he went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree and asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough! Now, O  Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”

O  Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we who escaped exile yet remain to this very day. Behold, we stand before You in our guilt, for we should not stand before You because of this.”

and said: “O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God, because our iniquities have expanded over our heads and our wrongdoing has grown up to the heavens.

You are righteous for everything that has come upon us! You have acted faithfully while we have done wickedly.

Oh, that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbor!

Look at me and be astonished, and put your hand over your mouth.

The princes refrained from talking, and put their hand on their mouth.

I would declare to Him the number of my steps; like a prince I would approach Him.

“Teach us what we will say to Him, for we cannot prepare our speech because of the darkness.

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

I was silent; I did not open my mouth, because it was You who did it.

If you have done foolishly in exalting yourself, or if you have devised evil, lay your hand on your mouth.

All of us like sheep have gone astray; each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

And I said: “Woe is me! For I am undone because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.”

But we all are as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness is as filthy rags; and we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope.

in order that you may remember, and be humiliated, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I am pacified toward you for all that you have done, says the Lord God.

We have sinned and have committed iniquity and have done wickedly and have rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and from Your judgments.

“O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day, to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, who are near and who are far off, through all the countries wherever You have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against You.

If the leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the disease covers all the skin of the person who has the disease from his head to his feet, wherever the priest looks,

Nations will see and be ashamed, despite all their might; they will put their hand on their mouth, and their ears will be deaf.

But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.

Be still, all flesh before the Lord, for He is stirred from His holy habitation.

“But the tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but struck his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner.’

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.

They said to him, “Quiet! Put your hand over your mouth and go with us. Be a father and priest for us. Is it better to be a priest for one man’s house or for a tribe and a family in Israel?”
