When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity. He said to the angel who was annihilating the people, “Enough! Now stay your hand.” The angel of the Lord was at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

A dreadful sound is in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him.

“My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, the grave is ready for me.

He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

He will deliver his soul from going down to the pit, and his life will see the light.

Oh, remember that my life is a breath! My eye will never again see good.

They abhorred all manner of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.

Concerning the works of men, by the word of Your lips I have avoided the paths of the violent.

O  Lord, You brought my soul up from Sheol; You have kept me alive, so that I should not go down to the pit.

For the Lord will pass through to kill the Egyptians. And when He sees the blood upon the lintel and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not permit the destroyer to come to your houses to kill you.

I said: In the middle of my days, I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am to be deprived of the rest of my years.

Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory. And he was eaten by worms and died.

Neither murmur, as some of them also murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer.

They had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek his name is Apollyon.

“The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up.
