“Why did I not die at birth? Why did I not expire when I came out of the womb?

because it did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes.

Why did her knees receive me? And why her breasts that I should nurse?

Let them be like a snail that melts as it goes, like the stillborn child of a woman, who never sees the sun.

I have leaned on You since my birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise will be continually of You.

And I thought that the dead, who had already died, were more fortunate than the living, who were still alive.

But better than both is the one who has not been, who will not observe the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

If a man is a father to a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are numerous, but his life is not satisfied with the many good things, and there is not one of his children to eventually bury him, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he —

Moreover, he has not observed the sun or experienced the sun; yet this child finds rest rather than he.

Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who are borne by Me from birth and are carried from the womb:

Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me as a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent with usury, nor have men lent to me on usury, yet every one of them curses me!

because he did not kill me from the womb, so that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb be always pregnant.

Give them, O  Lord— what will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
