because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless, and him who had none to help him.
They turn away the needy; the poor of the earth are forced to hide.
They snatch the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge from the poor.
Did I not weep for him who was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the poor?
or have eaten my morsel by myself, so that the fatherless could not eat of it
(but from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb);
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw I had help in the gate;
so that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto Him; and He hears the cry of the afflicted.
A father of the fatherless and a protector of the widows is God in His holy habitation.
For he will deliver the needy when he cries, the poor also, and him who has no helper.
I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a man without strength,
He who shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he also will cry out, but will not be heard.
Speak out for the mute, for the cause of all who are sons of destitution.
He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him. Is not this what it means to know Me? says the Lord.
He executes the judgment of the orphan and the widow and loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
