Why did you flee away secretly and sneak away from me and not tell me? I would have sent you away with joy and with songs, with the tambourine and harp.

then I will cut Israel out of the land which I have given them, and I will cast this house, which I have consecrated for My name, out of My sight, and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people.

“I am a laughingstock to my neighbor, who calls upon God, and He answers him; the righteous, upright man is a laughingstock.

Are not mockers with me? And does not my eye dwell on their provocation?

They abhor me, they flee far from me; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.

“Now I am their taunting song; yes, I am their byword.

You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

My disgrace is continually before me, and shame has covered my face

When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a proverb to them.

The lyre and the harp, the tambourine and pipe, and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord, or consider the work of His hands.

But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, would she not be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp seven days, and afterward she may be received again.”
