Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it; let a cloud settle on it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Am I able to bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

“For when a few years have passed, I will go the way from which I will not return.

We will surely die and are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; He devises plans so that His banished ones will not be cast out from Him.

They did not say, “Where is the Lord who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through and where no man lived?”

I said, I shall not see the Lord, even the Lord, in the land of the living; I shall see man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

You have laid me in the depths of the pit, in the dark and deep regions.

For now I would be lying down and would be at peace; I would have slept; then there would be rest for me,

a land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as thick darkness.”

There is no darkness nor shadow of death where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

Have the gates of death been opened to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may become cheerful again, before I go away and am no more.

If I wait, the grave is my house; I have made my bed in the darkness.

A man who is in his splendor, yet without understanding, is like the animals that perish.

But to You have I cried out, O  Lord, and in the morning my prayer comes before You.

Whatever your hands find to do, do with your strength; for there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.

Even if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity.
